The Beginner's Guide to Social Media Success

The Name

As you go through the Twitter registration process, you’ll have to decide on a Twitter name (also called a “handle”), which will show up whenever you post something on the site. Fortunately, you can always go back into your settings and select a new Twitter name, provided someone else hasn’t already taken it.

If you’re signing up for a personal account, it’s best to use your name or a variation of it.

Business accounts are different. Twitter is the branding tool, which means every inch of Twitter space should be used to further your brand. For example, our Twitter name is HRPeopleNews, which clearly ties us to the site. Stay as close to the name or theme of your company as possible and avoid numbers and symbols when you can.

Many of HRPeople’s featured authors are avid bloggers and have handles like hrbartender or greatleadership — notice the correlation to their brand?
