Dec. 15—BELLINGHAM — Twenty-two nonprofit organizations will get some holiday cheer this season, thanks to the first Whatcom Giveathon on Wednesday, Dec. 16.

The event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Northwood Hall, 3240 Northwest Ave., gathers groups that help others under one roof, providing the public a one-stop shop for charitable gift-giving.

It also will give people a chance to learn about the nonprofits, which were selected to participate after organizers whittled down a list of more than 50 that applied to be part of the event.

The Whatcom County Association of Realtors and Northwood Hall are sponsoring the event.

“I’m a firm believer in giving back to the community,” said Don Elliott, one of the organizers and the incoming Realtors association president.

He said 2009 has been a challenging year for many nonprofits, which are seeing increased need for their services even as donations have been dropping.

Admission to the event is free. It also will feature coffee, cookies, a raffle, entertainment by musicians and singers from area high schools, as well as greetings from, and pictures with, Santa and Mrs. Claus — all for a good cause.

“The idea is just come by, bring a donation, learn about your favorite charity,” Elliott said.
