As the Super Bowl reverly continues in New Orleans today, one local charity is also celebrating a big win — a $100,000 grant — thanks also to Saints quarterback Drew Brees. In this case, no game-winning touchdown was required but, instead, the support of over 500,000 ecstatic Brees fans.

Indeed, the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge won the $100,000 project grant as part of the Pespi Refresh Project where NFL fans nationwide were asked to vote online for their favorite NFL star’s charity of choice. Fans could also vote via text by typing the player’s first name to P-E-P-S-I (73774) for the idea they believed should be awarded a grant from the Pepsi Refresh Project.

Competing against Brees were New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) and Dallas Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware (Jonathan’s Place). And although their idea didn’t receive the most votes, Pepsi still awarded their charities a $25,000 Refresh Project grant, so that everyone could win.

The money from Brees’ charitable win will go towards improving the living facilities of New Orleans-based Patrick F. Taylor Hope Lodge, which provides rooms to cancer patients and their caregivers. There are currently 29 Hope Lodge facilities throughout the country.

“I’m thrilled that $100,000 will be going to the Hope Lodge, which will provide cancer patients and their caregiver’s rooms through the Pepsi Refresh Project,” Brees said in a news release. “We’re all winners in this project. These grants will help make a real difference in our communities. Thanks to the fans who voted, the support has been outstanding for all of us.”
